I had this same problem and couldn't even connect any external hard disk drive or DVD drive.
These 2 solutions worked for me:
1. Disable the HDD on the dock
- Control panel > Disk drives > WDC (this is the hdd on MY one10. You have to confirm which one yours is. It's the one that disappears when you pull the tab out.)
2. Turn off ALL Universal Serial Bus powersaving
- Control panel > Universal Serial Bus Controllers (there will by a lot) > Power management > UNCHECK ALL "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power"
What's happening is the tab has these powersaving features checked on default, so the computer is turning off the HDD whenever it detects some kind of drain. If you connect a USB device, the same thing happens. There's also some kind of power saving override when it comes to the HDD, which is stupid. So, even if you turn off power saving, the OS will still shut it off anyway. So, you need to disable this altogether.
It's a shame because it's a 500gb drive and it's virtually unusable because the tablet will shut it off in the middle of your **bleep** work!
Thankfully, I mostly use this for writing and word docs don't need a lot of space so I'm ok with the built in memory + sd card if ever.
I wonder though if it's possible to put an SSD drive in there because the HDD is clearly not working as it should.
