This actually brought up another issue the machine is having that I wasn't aware of: it will not ever completely shut down! If I select shut down from the start menu, the system shuts down, but then restarts a few seconds later.

So, I attempted a battery reset with the machine in sleep - but the volume button issue was not solved.

I now have two known issues: the volume button causes a reset, and the system will never completely shut down.
